Meet Dot Copeland

Dot CopelandI have lived in Sheffield all my life and have been volunteering for Home-Start for 8 years. Previously I was a travelling sales rep for 40 years in the motor trade. I found after a very short time into my retirement that I missed my working routine and didn’t like being at home all day or buying things I didn’t need in town. I wasn’t happy and needed something else in my life.

Then my daughter told me about Home-Start because she was training to be a volunteer. Thank God for Home-Start, it has made me a better person to live with! I have learnt a lot through my volunteering experiences. It has really opened my eyes! A lot of the girls we work with don’t get any other support – I found this hard to believe because family is so important to me. As volunteers we can help them to become good mothers.

I still keep in touch with most of the 8 families I have worked with. A few have become good friends and I am still an important part of their children’s lives.

I am a very busy person. I don’t watch television but I love to knit and read and go to bingo.
